This collaboration tool, now known as "KNOWTE", is a direct result of my research work on collaborative and context-aware systems. This collaboration tool has been developed for communication in a professional network (intranet based) rather than internet based social network.
Initially this software started as a 6 credit hour project of Syed Ali Raza, a master’s student (2011-2013) at IIT, QAU. My self and Mr Abdul Karim (a software professional by career, working on cotract as Assistant Professor in IIT, QAU) transformed my research work on collaborative and context-aware systems in to a collaboration tool taking along Syed Ali Raza all the way through design to its completion.
Uferah Shafi joined my group in next semester for her 6 credit hour project to take over KNOWTE for improvements in its PC version and to add Android based mobile phones to be using this application within intranet environment. Uferah Shafi is also looking after knowte.net website and forum management under kind guidence of Abdul Karim.
We have implemented this professional social network for the university domain. It can be extended to connect many collaborating universities or even all the universities in the world. It will help university people to collaborate and share their educational specific or other information among departments or universities.
Social networks are very popular, yet their privacy is always a debate. There is a possibility of ghost users on a social network and also privacy settings are rather complex. For these and other reasons, it is difficult to use them as a professional network of some specific interest group. We have different collaborative group and relationships in a society. There are many collaborative relationships among group members. The relationships in a collaborative system can be with friends and also with non-friends, close friends, friend of friend, family etc. We use collaborative groups that facilitate users in controlling the privacy and sharing information with others depending upon their relationship in social networks. Users can create their own collaborative groups and share information with them. Our model minimizes the privacy threats and encourages the sharing of information in a collaborative community.
